Alec Baldwin is seeking solace in the presence of his family after the tragic shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust last week.
According to People, the 30 Rock actor — along with wife Hilaria Baldwin and their six children — have reportedly left New York City and are "laying low" elsewhere.
"Alec and Hilaria left the city and are laying low with the kids," a source told the outlet. "They do go out occasionally to pick up dinner, but are mostly trying to protect the kids' privacy and just spend quiet time together as a family."
On Thursday, October 21 — Baldwin was rehearsing a shooting scene on the set of the western drama when the weapon went off firing off what appeared to be live rounds of ammunition. Hutchins was killed in the gunfire while director Joel Souza was critically injured.
"Alec continues to grieve the last week's tragic events, but has found comfort being surrounded by his loved ones. He is trying to focus his attention as best he can on being present for his wife and kids as he works through the trauma," the insider continued. The source then ensured, "Alec continues to cooperate with the sheriff's office in their investigation."
Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office spokesperson — Juan Rios — told the magazine that a preliminary investigation found that the bullet that Baldwin fired off fatally hit Hutchins and then went on to strike Souza.
According to a search warrant affidavit via the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office — the film's assistant director Dave Halls handed the It's Complicated actor the supposedly "cold" —meaning that it does not contain live rounds — firearm. Upon handing the gun to Baldwin, Halls reportedly also told the actor that the weapon in question was "cold".
As OK! previously reported, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adam Mendoza confirmed to NBC’s Savannah Guthriethat the assistant director David Halls and lead armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed are the main focus of the investigation. But also that Baldwin will not be completely ruled out.
“There’s three people that handled the firearm prior to the death of Miss Hutchins,” Mendoza said while appearing on the Today Show on Thursday. “So those people will be interviewed, are the focus of the investigation, and so nobody’s been cleared as of yet.”
