Salesman shot dead in downtown Srinagar

The 45-year-old man, working as salesman at a shop owned by a Kashmiri Pandit, was shot dead by unknown gunmen, suspected to be militants, at Bohri kadal area of downtown Srinagar on Monday evening.

Official sources said that gunmen fired upon the man identified as Mohammad Ibrahim Khan (45) son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan of Ashtangi Bandipora, leaving him critically injured. The man with bullet injuries in left side chest and abdominal was rushed to SMHS hospital.

Dr Kanwaljeet Singh, medical superintendent of the hospital, told GNS Khan succumbed to the wounds. Police in a statement issued later said at about 2010 hours said that information was received about a militant incident at Borikadal area of Srinagar. Senior police officers reached at the spot, a police spokesperson said.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that (militant) had fired upon one civilian identified as Mohammad Ibrahim Khan son of Ghulam Mohammad Khan resident of Astengoo Bandipora at Borikadal area of Srinagar,” he said, adding, “In this incident, he had sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries.”

Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law, he said. “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the circumstances which lead to this crime,” he said, adding, “Area has been cordoned off and search in the area is going on.”
