#EndViolenceAgainstWomen: TikTok is raising awareness of gender-based violence

TikTok is on a mission to give a voice to women who experience violence and sexual assault. Marking this year's 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the platform has launched the #EndViolenceAgainstWomen hashtag. This keyword aims to bring together ideas and information on what needs to change in order to create a safer world for women and girls, as well as courses of action for combating such violence.

Launched on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the initiative runs through December 10, 2021, Human Rights Day: "It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls," UN Women explains on its website.

It's a call to action that TikTok is embracing with the #EndViolenceAgainstWomen hashtag. On the social network, users can already access this new hub, which gathers survivors' testimonies and expert advice, as well as information on topics such as consent: "We'll encourage our community to share how they intend to stand up for women and girls around the world with #EndViolenceAgainstWomen," said Julie de Bailliencourt, head of product policy at TikTok. To date, the #EndViolenceAgainstWomen hashtag has some 33.5 million views on the Chinese social network.

On the platform, many users have already shared their experiences. Meanwhile, the British Transport Police took the opportunity to remind users that they can text 61016 to report incidents of harassment on the rail network. Using an audio clip trending on TikTok, the video has scored more than 1.3 million views on the @britishtransportpolice account in barely four days.

"Violence against women is an existing global crisis that thrives on other crises. Conflict, climate-related natural disasters, food insecurity and human rights violations all contribute to women and girls living with a sense of danger, even in their own homes, neighborhoods or communities," said Sima Bahous, executive director, UN Women.

On TikTok, testimonies from female survivors of violence are joined by videos of men calling for greater awareness of the kinds of situations that women can experience. These discussions will continue with a live event hosted by the Refuge charity on TikTok, Wednesday, December 1 at 5 pm UK time.

In its latest report, UN Women estimates that 736 million women -- or almost one in three --  "have been subjected to intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life (30% of women aged 15 and older)".

This isn't the first time that TikTok has mobilized for victims of sexual assault. In April 2021, the social network also launched the #ConsentMatters hashtag.
