900 HP FORD MUSTANG SHELBY GT500 KR DEBUTS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

In honor of the company’s 60th year anniversary next year, Shelby American is providing an “extremely limited production” of its famous Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR package for any 2020-2022 model year variants that seek 900 horsepower. Yup, nine hundred.

KR stands for “King of the Road.” This is only the third time in the company’s history it has ever offered a “KR” package. This will be the first time however it will be produced in such small quantities though. Only 225 will be built in total, with an allotment of 45 builds for overseas. So, of the 225 models in total, only 180 will be for the United States.

The first Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR was offered in 1968 and was powered by a 428 Cobra Jet V8 that produced 335 horsepower – which is pretty basic V6 power today. Available in both a fastback and convertible iteration, Ford dealers sold 1,570 units (1,053 fastback and 517 convertibles). Then in 2008, Shelby American came out with another King of the Road model, making only 1,000 of them. That Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR utilized a supercharged V8 producing around 540 horsepower, and ran you a whopping $80,000. So with this third iteration, you could say the ante has been upped in a way that’s only fit for a king. And the price tag reflects as much. Shelby American will sell you a turnkey GT500KR at $127,895 USD, or $54,995 USD if you want to upgrade your own 2020-2022 Shelby GT500.

Specs:

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR looks fast sitting still thanks to some of its exterior upgrades like a carbon-fiber hood, front splitter, and rear diffuser. Some of the exterior options offered include a wide body kit, polished supercharger, rear seat delete with harness bar, and Le Mans style over the top racing stripes. Powering the GT500KR is a roided-out version 5.2L Predator V8. Attached to that is a 3.2 liter Whipple supercharger that will help the engine produce over 900 horsepower altogether.

The first Shelby GT500KR production car will be sold at auction for charity at the end of January 2022. Owners of a 2020-2022 GT500 can begin ordering their KR package Feb. 1 of 2022. Overall production is slated for first quarter of 2022.
