Lightning Coach Jon Cooper Enters Covid Protocol, Misses Game, Team Still Wins

TAMPA, FLORIDA - JULY 07: Pat Maroon #14 of the Tampa Bay Lightning hoists the Stanley Cup after the 1-0 victory against the Montreal Canadiens in Game Five to win the 2021 NHL Stanley Cup Final at Amalie Arena on July 07, 2021 in Tampa,...

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, 54, went under NHL Covid-19 protocol hours before Tuesday night’s 4-3 win over the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

It was the only game of the night, as nine others were postponed due to Covid-19 issues.

Also, it was the team’s last game before the Christmas Break, and the Lightning are now among the 26 teams—of 32—that have members in the protocol.

Assistant coach Derek Lalonde ran the forwards, while co-assistants Jeff Halpern and Rob Zettler and goalie coach Frantz Jean sat on the bench.

The Golden Knights faced COVID challenges too, with Evgenii Dadonov and Alex Pietrangelo testing positive earlier in the day.

It’s unclear how long Cooper will be out.
