With all of this hype building around the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV electric pickup trucks (and don’t forget the Hummer EV), you’d be fairly convinced that today’s Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks would be the last GM half-ton pickups with combustion engines. Well, that’s where you’re wrong. And we could see the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 by 2025.
Next-Generation Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra: The First Details
During General Motors Investor Day, GM President Mark Reuss deliberately made note that the company was not done with selling conventional pickup trucks, even as the company continues to allocate much of its resources into electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and more powerful software. The current target to launch the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra is 2025, and Reuss also confirmed an “engine portfolio update” for the upcoming family of GM trucks.

“In 2025 when we launch the next-generation (Silverado and Sierra), it will include new powertrains with major improvements and efficiency, and performance…the next engine portfolio update in our next-generation full-size trucks will deliver better than a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gases compared to today’s offerings,” he said.
The 10 percent figure seems to be the sum of the 2022 model year mid-cycle update for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, and the next-generation trucks coming in 2025.
“The (Silverado and Sierra 1500) mid-cycle enhancement we launched for 2022 has a 5.8 percent reduction in greenhouse gas, and the next-gen models in ’25 are expected to have a further 4.7 percent reduction,” said Reuss.
What could this “engine portfolio update” elude to? Industry-wide, everybody seems have a different technique to reduce tailpipe emissions. GM’s chief truck rival, Ford Motor Company, took to making an F-150 hybrid, otherwise known as the PowerBoost. Over at Stellantis, the Ram 1500 offers a 48V mild hybrid setup branded as eTorque.
