THE FORD MAVERICK MAY SOON BE ABLE TO POWER YOUR HOUSE

Ford Motor Company is the first truck maker to introduce an inverter generator system on a pickup. Starting with the 2021 Ford F-150, the Pro Power Onboard system comes in handy in a multitude of situations. From keeping the lights on during power outages, to camping, to tailgating, to running power tools on the job site, customers have responded in kind regarding its usability, with CEO Jim Farley mentioning that the technology is a true “breakthrough feature” for customers. Starting with a 2.0 kW system with the 2.7L EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost and 5.0L Coyote engines, moving to 2.4 kW in the PowerBoost Hybrid, and even 7.2 kW as an option on the hybrid F-150, it’s a technology that seems obvious to integrate into the rest of the Ford pickup truck lineup, which recently added the entry-level Maverick to the portfolio.

As it stands, the Ford Maverick does not have Pro Power Onboard technology, but we recently learned why, as well as if the company plans to add the inverter generator system in the future.

“Pro Power Onboard has been wildly successful with F-Series. We’re looking at that. As we go forward with Maverick we’re assessing if that’s something that we wanna do, as well,” said Ford Maverick marketing manager Trevor Scott in a one-one interview with MC&T.

Scott adds that the Maverick is currently equipped with multiple 110V outlets, which are effective in running electronics such as laptops and portable refrigerators. More output is required if one is looking to power a house, however.

Even if Ford wanted to implement the 2022 Maverick with a Pro Power Onboard system, the truck is hampered by its current electrical architecture, which is not the same as what we see with the new F-150.

“(Pro Power Onboard) requires the next-generation electrical architecture to be able to reuse what’s on F-150 today. Maverick does not have that,” explained an engineer. “There is a plan to migrate to that architecture in the future. I won’t give you exact timing specifics, but we’re also discussing internally on what kind of DNA runs through all of our trucks.”

Despite not having the larger engines found in the 2022 Ford F-150, the 2022 Ford Maverick could still produce enough power customers would expect from a Pro Power Onboard inverter generator system.

“We’ve had conversation of some element of power to the box going to be what it is? It could be maybe not a 2.0 kW system. Maybe it is… (with a four cylinder engine) the capability is there, especially with the hybrid. That’s what we’re looking into and ideally leaning into that.”
