If you were hoping for more of a Hummer-like variant of the new Chevrolet Silverado EV, don’t worry. General Motors today confirmed that a Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss variant, as well as a price spectrum customers can expect to pay.
“Silverado EV Trail Boss taps into the rugged foundation of our capable, factory lifted trucks,” said GM CEO Mary Barra during her CES keynote speech.
Based on the B-Roll images from GM’s CES Keynote speech, the Chevrolet Silverado EV Trail Boss will feature a few signature styling cues that are shared with today’s ICE-powered Silverado 1500 Trail Boss. These include a blackened front fascia, red tow hooks, a factory lift, black wheels, black mirrors, and Goodyear Wrangler tires.
Chevrolet further confirmed that the Silverado EV will be offered at price points ranging from “$50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and more.” Where the Trail Boss ends up is probably in the $60,000-$70,000 range, based on what we currently see with today’s Trail Boss, the Silverado ZR2, and how much GM is asking for the Hummer EV. In short, this high-performance off-road truck won’t come cheap. But if you’re dead set on having something that can follow your neighbor’s Rivian into the trails, perhaps this electric Trail Boss is worth waiting for.
The Chevrolet Silverado EV will begin production in spring of 2023 as a 2024 model year vehicle. At first, the electric truck will be made for fleets and unavailable to retail customers. By fall of 2023, the 2024 Silverado EV RST First Edition will begin production, which customers can reserve now. In the summer of 2024, the Silverado EV WT will be made available to retail customers, as will a more affordable version of the RST. The Trail Boss variant has yet to be scheduled, but at this point we expect it to arrive either as a 2025 or 2026 model year vehicle, depending on how the next few years shake out. As for a ZR2 version, well, we’ll have to wait and see.
