Ireland is promoting cycling in both urban and rural areas

Ireland is due to launch a major cycling plan this year to develop a vast network of cycle paths for both towns and villages. This is part of a broader climate action plan, which aims to drastically reduce CO2 emissions throughout the country.

This plan includes the development of local bicycle networks as well as the construction of new greenways, reserved for non-motorized vehicles, throughout the country. In the Dublin region alone, no less than 500 km of new cycle and walking paths are expected to be opened in the next few years.

Measures will also be taken to make cycling even safer. For example, fines will be increased for drivers who park on sidewalks, bus lanes or bike paths. In general, the authorities want to encourage all road users to show more respect to one another.
