The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has announced its 2022 season.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is planning for a full 2022 season, and has announced what it will be.
“As none of us has a clue about what the future holds, particularly as it pertains to the COVID virus, my ‘good news’ is not so much news as it is an announcement of what we earnestly hope will happen in 2022,” wrote the theater’s artistic director, Bonnie J. Monte, in a message to the theater’s friends, patrons, volunteers and artists. “Despite the uncertainty, I see no other option at this point other than to forge ahead with optimism and determination, and so, all of us here at The Shakespeare Theatre, are already busy creating plans and prepping for our 60th Diamond Anniversary Season — one that will mark our return to a full season of shows, and as many of our education programs as possible.
“If fate decrees that any of our plans have to change, we will deal with that as we have throughout this pandemic, with an agile pivot to alternate plans and creative, new options.”
The season will include a production of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” on the Outdoor Stage at the Greek Theatre at St. Elizabeth University in Florham Park, June 29-July 31, as well as the following plays, indoors at the Main Stage at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre at Drew University in Madison:
June 8-26: “Enchanted April,” by Matthew Barber, adapted from the novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim.
Aug. 17-Sept. 4: “The Metromaniacs,” by Alexis Piron, adapted by David Ives.
Sept. 21-Oct. 9: “The Caretaker,” by Harold Pinter.
Oct. 26-Nov. 13: Two One-Acts by Alice Childress.
Dec. 7-Jan. 1: “Twelfth Night,” by William Shakespeare.
The theater has been sticking mostly to outdoor productions during the pandemic, though it did present Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” in December (but had to cut the run short due to breakthrough cases of COVID detected within the company).
The theater has its origins in the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, which launched in 1963 in Cape May and relocated to Drew University in 1972.
