So much for the simple life! There’s nothing understated about Nicole Richie’s $10.2 million mansion, which she purchased with hubby Joel Maddenlate last summer after selling their slightly more modest digs in the same star-studded neighborhood.
Clocking in at 6,165 square feet, the stunning spread has five bedrooms and six bathrooms, which the designer, 40, and Good Charlotte rocker, 42, share with their kids, Harlow, 13, and Sparrow, 12. (The family also has a menagerie of pets, including two German shepherds, cats, chickens and a lizard!)
Built in 1987 as a French-style chateau, the abode underwent a total overhaul in 2019 thanks to Alexi Rennalls and Sam Gnatovich, the founders of L.A.-based SIMO Design. The husband-and-wife team scooped up the place in 2018 and even used it as their personal residence while renovating.
“We knew that we would have to tear it to the studs,” noted Gnatovich, “but it was worth it because the underlying volumes of the space were great.”
The duo was inspired by Parisian architecture and aimed to introduce modern elements without them feeling out of place. Indeed, the mix of old and new can be seen inside thanks to the plaster coffered ceiling dome in the entrance (one of the few original details), lime wash paint, contemporary trimmings and striking slabs of marble.
Clearly Richie and Madden liked what the previous owners did with the place, opting to keep the designers’ neutral color palette and outfitting the rooms with their own elegant, minimalist decor.
The hilltop home’s outdoor areas are equally impressive thanks to a sizeable pool, a chic fireplace and sweeping valley views on one side and Franklin Canyon Park on the other. It’s safe to say the future’s looking good for the Richie- Madden crew!
