GM Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors last week that the automaker intended on accelerating production of their electric vehicles, aiming to deliver 400,000 EVs in North America during 2022 and 2023, with Hummer EV reservations topping nearly 59,000 hand raisers alone. The Chevrolet Silverado EV, another 110,000 reservations.
For that to happen, production rate would need to turn up rapidly from the cautious pace we’re seeing today. Particularly for the GMC Hummer EV.
According to Reuters, details shared with suppliers indicate that GM intends to increase production of both the Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicles to help meet demand through 2022, from 7,000 estimated vehicles to a combined 46,000.

GM told suppliers for the GMC Hummer EV to plan for the production of 21,000 vehicles for this year at the automaker’s Factory Zero in Detroit. Previously they had planned on building just 3,800 of them. Currently, there are nearly 59,000 reservations for the GMC Hummer EV pickups and SUVs. So the increase is undoubtedly great news for those with reservations as it means they have an increased chance of getting their Hummer EVs within the next two years.
Secondly, the Cadillac Lyriq is expected to launch this year, and Barra stated last week that there is a strong demand for the electric SUV. As a result, GM has told suppliers to gear up for the production of 25,000 of them for this year, which is up considerably from the previous planned 3,200. General Motors is responding to customer demand, which is always a good thing to see. However, that’s not all that is at play here as they’re building up competition pressure with Ford, who has also expanded production for their EVs.
