The recently revived God of War series is getting a sequel, God of War Ragnarok. After the success of the original God of War, gamers are curious to learn more about the upcoming game, including what is God of War Ragnarok going to be about.
The first God of War game followed Kratos, a former Greek god of war, and his son Atreus on their journey to bury Kratos’ wife. The new game picks up where the last off, following up on the repercussions of the first game’s dramatic finale.
What do we know about God of War Ragnarok?
God of War Ragnarok is the sequel to the hit single-player, story-focused revival of God of War in 2016. The new game has been highly awaited by fans and is expected to release in late summer or early fall of 2022. God of War Ragnarok will be available only on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. While the 2016 God of War reboot did recently make its way to PC, fans who want to play it immediately upon release will need Sony’s flagship console.
The name Ragnarok comes from the name for a cataclysmic event that ends the world in Nordic folklore. It’s possible this will play a major part in the sequel’s story.
When does God of War Ragnarok release?
No release date has been revealed for the God of War sequel just yet.
Some rumors speculate that a late September or early October 2022 release is possible but for now, there’s nothing concrete for fans to hook onto.
God of War Ragnarok looks to follow up on a dangerous secret that is revealed in God of War about Kratos’ son, Atreus. Atreus seems to be taking more and more of a focus within the game’s story, and the success of his and Kratos’ dynamic in the first game has meant Santa Monica Studio is doubling down on it for Ragnarok.
The Last of Us and God of War both proved just how narratively compelling and emotionally resonant a parent-child journey can be, and Ragnarok is looking to continue this trend. Some elements of the game’s story have been revealed, like the appearance of a certain iconic god of thunder, as well as a race against time to find an ancient being.
With only the most basic snippets available, however, fans will have to wait for more information to glean what the story will address.
