Shane McMahon has been released from WWE. The move comes as rumors of dissent swirled in the locker room following McMahon’s position as a Royal Rumble producer on January 29.

The son of WWE CEO and wrestling industry legend Vince McMahon, Shane, 52, made it to the final three in the Royal Rumble—his first in-ring appearance since WrestleMania 37 last April during which he faced off against Braun Strowman in a cage match in a featured bout. The latter was released from his WWE contract in June.

McMahon first became in-ring talent in the late 1980s as a referee. Then, during WWE’s “Attitude Era” of the late 1990s, he became an on-screen personality involved in many of his father’s storylines, most notably with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

He eventually became an in-ring performer, taking part in many notable matches, and has served myriad backstage roles.

McMahon was not serving in an executive role at the time of his release; he was considered in-ring talent with plans to participate at both the upcoming Elimination Chamber and WrestleMania 38.
