A Record 30 House Democrats Retiring Before The Midterms

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 05: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that the House will proceed with articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump at the Speaker's Balcony in the U.S. Capitol December 05, 2019 in...

The number of House Democrats not seeking reelection is at an all-time high with 30 retiring from the lower chamber.

Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-New York) made an announcement this week that she is not seeking reelection making her the 30th House Democrat to not declare for reelection. The last time this happened was in 2018 when Donald Trump was president 34 House Republicans retired.

Now it is President Joe Biden who is facing the same problem with the odds in favor of the Republicans winning the House majority during the midterm elections. In contrast to Democrats, just 13 incumbent House Republicans are not seeking reelection while two are retiring due to getting alternate jobs.

The Cook Political Report, an election analyzer, identified 39 Democrat seats are vulnerable during the midterm elections. Despite these challenges, Democrats are hoping that declining Covid-19 infections and its $1 trillion infrastructure bill will bring out voters.
