Shelley, Markowski Earn Second Team All-Big Ten; Markowski Top Freshman

In a deep league, the Huskers notch multiple honors

The Big Ten Conference announced their season awards for women's basketball Tuesday morning, with Nebraska represented in the honors.

Sophomore Jaz Shelley and freshman Alexis Markowski were each voted to the All-Big Ten team by both league coaches and media.

Shelley, an Australian native and Oregon transfer, has made an immediate impact on Huskers. She posted a triple-double in November against North Carolina Central. A consistent player for the Big Red, Shelley is second on the team in scoring (12.4) and rebounding (6.8), has made the most 3s (65), and is the team leader in total steals (50) and blocked shots (30).

A Lincoln, Nebraska native, Markowski began the season coming off the bench but was still impacting games with productive minutes. She has started 16 games, improving her numbers to a team-leading 13 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. In conference, those numbers go up to 15.6 and 8.6.

Markowski notched two other honors Tuesday: All-Big Ten Freshman Team and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. The Pius X alum earned eight Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors on the season and one WSBWA National Freshman of the Week award.

The last Husker to win Big Ten Freshman of the Year was Jessica Shepard in 2016.

Nebraska begins Big Ten Tournament play Thursday in Indianapolis. The Huskers will play the winner of Wisconsin and Illinois.
