After a slow start to the season, the Vancouver Canucks have been a different team since Bruce Brodeau took over. Under Brodeau, Vancouver has gone 22-11-5 and finds itself five spots out of a playoff spot. While a return to the postseason is an exciting opportunity, they will be looking to add to their core rather than risk the future with the trade deadline only hours away.

Conor Garland
Over the last few weeks, Garland has been a popular name in the rumor mill. In 58 games for the Canucks this season, he has recorded 32 points including 14 goals. While his offense would be missed, Garland could net a return that would help the Canucks now and in the future. He is also on a team-friendly deal which should boost his return. One team that may be a good trade partner is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Two Penguins that could help Vancouver are John Marino and Marcus Pettersson. They would improve the defense for years to come, and Marino has offensive upside. Regardless of what moves the Canucks make, dealing Garland could bring back multiple impact pieces.

Draft Capital
Although the Canucks have been a pleasant surprise, their prospect pool is low. Other than Jack Rathbone who has been slowed by injuries, Vancouver does not have a lot of elite prospects. As they look to continue their recent success, a steady flow of talent will be critical. They could restock their system by trading players such as Brock Boeser, who will be a restricted free agent this summer. An extension would be preferred, but the Canucks will have to get creative to restock their system.
Jaroslav Halak
For Halak, his first season in Vancouver has not gone as planned. In 13 games this season, he has posted a .886 save percentage and allowed 34 goals. The 36-year-old also earned a $1.25 million performance bonus that will apply to next year’s cap if he is still on the roster. With Boeser in need of a new deal, clearing Halak’s contract would provide needed relief. A trade would not land a high pick at this point, and Halak would have to waive his no-trade clause. However, clearing cap space now could be vital down the road.
