US Supreme Court Justice Thomas released from hospital

US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been released from hospital after a week-long stay

Washington (AFP) - Clarence Thomas, the longest-serving justice on the US Supreme Court, was released from hospital on Friday after a week-long stay, the court said.

Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington on March 18 with flu-like symptoms, according to the court.

The 73-year-old justice was diagnosed with an infection and treated with intravenous antibiotics, the court said.

The court did not specify what type of infection Thomas had but said he did not have Covid-19.

Announcing his hospitalization, the court said Thomas was expected to be released "in a day or two."

It did not provide any explanation for why he remained in hospital longer than initially expected.

Thomas, one of six conservative justices on the nine-member court and the only African-American, was nominated by then president George H.W. Bush in 1991.

Thomas's wife, Virginia, a conservative activist, has been in the headlines this week following revelations she exchanged text messages with former president Donald Trump's chief of staff seeking to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
