They happen so rarely that it’s like seeing a leprechaun or a unicorn. We’re talking about trades between the Yankees and Mets—and one just went down on Sunday.
The Yankees and Mets swapped relievers, as right-hander Miguel Castro will join the Yankees while lefty Joely Rodríguez will don the blue and orange.
The Yankees will be Castro’s, 27, fifth team since his 2015 debut. He’ll make $2.62 million this year and be a free agent at the season’s end. He’s amassed a 4.13 ERA and 311 strikeouts to 190 walks in 353 1/3 innings for a 107 ERA+.
He’s also pitched for the Blue Jays, Rockies and Orioles in addition to the New York teams.
The 30-year-old Rodríguez, originally acquired by the Yanks as part of the Joey Gallo trade, pitched just 19 innings in the Bronx. In parts of four seasons, he’s recorded 89 strikeouts to 42 walks in 95 2/3 innings. He’s due $2 million this year and will enter arbitration for the first time next year.
There have been a couple of minor transactions between the two teams, but the last time they exchanged a big name was the Mike Stanton deal in 2004.
