The Scottish startup FreeFlow Technologies has developed an extremely compact electric bike motor that, when fitted behind the crankset, is almost invisible. Its accompanying battery is just as discreet. With this kind of gear, it becomes difficult to distinguish between an electric bike and a traditional push-bike.
Ultra-compact, the FreeFlow Technologies motor is installed just behind the crankset of the bike, making it almost invisible. It may be small, but it's still powerful, reaching a nominal power of 250W for a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
The FreeFlow modular system can be combined with a lithium-ion battery, with a capacity of 252 or 387 Wh, which can be recharged more than 1,000 times. Also very discreet, it is fitted along the diagonal tube of the bike frame. Depending on its diameter, it can even be inserted directly inside the frame's tube. From a distance, it is difficult to tell this kind of e-bike apart from a traditional bike.
It now remains to convince bike manufacturers to adopt this solution for their future models. In November 2021, FreeFlow announced that it had partnered with the British manufacturer Twnpa Cycles, which has since tested a prototype for a wooden bike equipped with this system.
