Neil Patrick Harris has landed in hot water for an insensitive action he and his husband took over ten years ago, though it truly is one for the record books. Writer Ashley Reese went viral when she tweeted this week, “I cannot believe how many very online people over the age of 25 are just now finding out about Neil Patrick Harris’ disgusting Amy Winehouse cake…”

First, it’s important to know that the legendary singer Amy Winehouse died in January 2011 after a highly publicized and often-ridiculed battle with drug addiction, alcohol abuse and depression. The photo, which was captured at Harris and his husband David Burtka‘s Halloween party in November 2011, the very same year she died, shows a meat platter at the party designed to look like Amy Winehouse’s rotting corpse.

The fact that they used this fake corpse to serve meat is even more disturbing, and a sign which also read “The Corpse Of Amy Winehouse,” showed a list of the foods that were available including “beef ribs, pulled pork, chicken sausage in a spicy bbq sauce.”

While this timing was clearly the dictionary definition of a joke told “too soon,” there was no uproar at the time of the Halloween party and most people had clearly forgotten about it. Harris never publicly commented on the platter and still has yet to say anything after it resurfaced.
