Cycling-friendly Ghent will host Velo-city in 2024

Ghent, Belgium, has been chosen to host the world cycling summit, Velo-city in 2024. The news is also an opportunity to take stock of the measures taken in recent years by the local authorities, which have made the city especially cycling friendly.

The European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) has announced that the Belgian city of Ghent will host Velo-city 2024. And it has to be said that this Flemish city has done a lot to facilitate the life of cyclists. Indeed, the city is setting an example to follow in Belgium and beyond.

For several years now, the municipality has been committed to developing and promoting cycling. Over the years, it has introduced numerous measures in favor of soft mobility, such as the implementation of new traffic plans with a 30 km/h speed limit in the city center and surrounding neighborhoods, as well as the installation of several thousand bicycle parking spaces throughout the city, all within the framework of its "Mobility Plan, Ghent 2030."

The 2015 target of reaching 35% of journeys in the city made by bicycle has already been achieved. Another feat: the Ghent-Saint-Pierre station will soon be equipped with the largest covered bicycle parking facility in Europe, with a capacity of 17,000 spaces. Construction work is expected to last until 2027.

Every year, Velo-city brings together industry professionals, politicians, associations and various decision-makers to discuss the future of cycling. The 2022 edition will take place in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, from June 14 to 17. The following year, the event will take place in Leipzig, Germany.
