Karim Benzema is playing arguably his best soccer at the moment. The 34-year-old striker looks to be in the best shape of his life and is showing no signs of slowing down. He is set to play in his fifth Champions League final. He will be participating in his third World Cup, representing France.

This season, Benzema scored a career high of 27 goals in La Liga, allowing him to win the Pichichi Trophy for the first time. In addition, his 15 goals in the Champions League so far this season are a career high, as well. He is currently the top scorer in this season’s Champions League. Furthermore, Benzema recently became the oldest player in Champions League history to score a hat-trick. He is also the highest-scoring French player of the modern era with 413 goals, besting Thierry Henry‘s 411.
Benzema’s 86 career goals in the Champions League place him third all-time alongside Robert Lewandowski. In the Champions League final, Benzema has the opportunity to break Cristiano Ronaldo‘s record of most goals in a Champions League tournament. With that record being 17 goals, he would need a hat-trick to break the record.
Can Benzema Make an Impact at the World Cup?
Based on how brilliantly he has played this season with Real Madrid, there is no doubt Benzema’s presence will be felt. His success this season makes him a justifiable favorite for the Ballon d’Or award. Additionally, he has the potential of being the best player in Qatar. His skills, expertise, and leadership strengthen France’s advantage. While he is definitely capable of leading the team, he will need his teammates to do their part, too. In other words, France needs to come in prepared, focused, and ready to go as a unit.
France enters as the defending champions, and they are favorites to win the title again. Les Bleus had a disastrous run in last summer’s Euro 2020. They are determined to redeem themselves and the only way to do it is to retain their world championship. Benzema would love to help France win the title for the third time, while solidifying himself as one of his country’s best players in both domestic and international play.
