Senegal's Chances at The World Cup in Qatar

Back in 2002, Senegal had one of the most magical runs in World Cup history. A run that started with an upset victory over France who was the defending champions at the time. Unfortunately, the Lions of Teranga would not qualify for the World Cup again until 2018. Their run four years ago ended in a heartbreaking fashion. This time, Senegal is determined to have another strong run.

Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time back in February. In March, Senegal booked their ticket to Qatar. The Lions of Teranga are on quite a tear. They’re on a mission to build on their recent success in order to solidify themselves as one of the best teams in the world not only for time being but for years to come.

Can Senegal make an impact in Qatar?

Honestly, there’s no reason for Senegal to not make it out of the group stage. The Lions of Teranga are drawn alongside the Netherlands, Ecuador, and Qatar. Quite frankly, the only challenge Senegal faces is the Netherlands. There’s no reason Senegal can’t get the job done against their other two opponents. Furthermore, Senegal is honestly perfectly capable of beating the Netherlands and topping the group.

Senegal has plenty of talent. Although the likes of Edouard Mendy, Sadio Mané, and Idrissa Gueye are the names that truly stand out the most, the Lions of Teranga have plenty of other talented players all perfectly capable of making an impact for the team. In addition, manager Aliou Cissé is very good at leading his players. Senegal has the potential to overachieve in Qatar. Whether they do or not remains to be seen.

As a team filled with talent with excellent coaching, Senegal can make an impact in Qatar. However, if the Lions of Teranga intend to go on a magical run, their main objective is to arrive with a winning mentality and team chemistry.
