UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson wants the EU to ditch “pointless” checks on goods entering Northern Ireland.
In his interview with the parenting website Mumsnet, PM Johnson placed the pressure on the EU, following Tony Blair’s comment that the Northern Ireland Protocol negotiated as part of the Brexit deal with the EU was a “bad deal” that potentially could undermine the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
Johnson disagrees and wants to see “more pragmatism” and “less theology” from the EU around the Northern Ireland Protocol to avoid the hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
“I think that the protocol is certainly not functioning well,” said Johnson.
“So for me, the priority is to fix the protocol and get the Good Friday Agreement institutions up and running again. That’s what needs to happen.”
