VTubers are getting more and more popular around the world thanks to the likes of Ironmouse and CodeMiko. Once only common in Japan, the west has started to embrace the idea of motion capture avatars in place of face cams while streaming.
Hyakumantenbara Salome, a VTuber with NIJISANJI JP, recently reached 1 million YouTube subscribers in just two weeks. Reaching such a massive audience in just 13 days is an incredibly quick rise that has made Salome the fastest-growing VTuber of all time.
"NIJISANJI livers, management, and fans who have supported me... Thank you very much to everyone," Salome tweeted.
So who even is Salome? Well, her mysterious sudden appearance is part of what has made her so intriguing to people.
Salome popped up on YouTube on May 24, 2022. She became the fastest-growing VTuber to reach 100,000 subscribers, hitting the milestone after just two hours into her debut. She was viewed over 1 million times by the following day. The stream largely consisted of Salome introducing herself, showing her certificate of residency and her gastroscopy. She also told followers that her dream is to "be the perfect lady."
While her streams are in Japanese, other countries have taken a liking to Salome for her formal way of speaking, animated reactions to scary video games, and dirty innuendos. A lot of people have found her very funny and enjoy watching her streams no matter the language.
Others, however, are a bit skeptical about her sudden massive growth. Most VTubers will get a massive amount of new followers when they initially debut but the growth usually slows down. But with Salome, she continued to rapidly grow her fanbase after the announcement. It seemed like she came out of nowhere and grew without having a real "gimmick" like other popular VTubers.
Either way, Salome has continued to grow around the world and shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. She may have been thought to be a joke or meme at first, but Salome has proven she is truly entertaining to watch for many people.
