2022 Bold Predictions: Jacksonville Jaguars

The most anticipated player, former No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence had an up-and-down debut campaign in the NFL. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ season was marred by more than their inconsistent play on the field. One of college football’s most successful coaches, Urban Meyer, brought his talents to Duval County. It became apparent that he was not ready for the pros, and Lawrence and the team suffered for it. With that behind them, the Jaguars can now focus solely on playing football.

A 2,000-Yard Rushing Attack

Third-year running back James Robinson will share the backfield with Lawrence’s Clemson teammate and fellow first round pick Travis Etienne. Robinson was a 1,000 yard running back in his rookie season in 2020. If Etienne is fully recovered from last season’s foot injury and back to his former self, he will be a major factor.

Lawrence Finishes as a Top-10 Quarterback

Heading into Lawrence’s sophomore season, the team brought in a bevy of firepower. He will benefit from the addition of receivers Zay Jones and Christian Kirk. Also added was former New York Giants tight end Evan Engram. With the chemistry already built with wide receivers Laviska Shenault and Marvin Jones, Lawrence will put up impressive passing numbers.

The debacle that was the Meyer experience was short lived. Hopefully for this organization, it is entirely in the rearview mirror. The key to that was when they hired new head coach Doug Pederson. Pederson led the Philadelphia Eagles to three consecutive playoff berths, and a Super Bowl win in his second season at the helm. With the young nucleus of the roster in Jacksonville, if they heed his message and methods they are in perfect hands without the fear of being kicked in practice. One thing going against them is their division. The AFC South has had two teams make the playoffs the last handful of seasons with Jacksonville not being one of them.

Defense will be a Liability

As in season’s past, including 2021-22, the Jaguars defense struggled to put together a complete game defensively. The “bend don’t break” philosophy does not work if it breaks more than it bends. The new regime will hope to establish better results with many of the same parts. The duo of first round selected linebackers, No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker and Devin Lloyd should help Josh Allen be more effective.
