2022 NBA Draft Scouting Report: Chet Holmgren

Gonzaga has been quite successful in generating NBA prospects. From Domantas Sabonis to Brandon Clarke and Jalen Suggs. Chet Holmgren, a 7’0″ foot recruit, is another top-notch product of the Gonzaga system. Entering his collegiate career as the number-one ranked player in the country, it was clear that Holmgren would be the cream of the crop. Averaging 14.1 points per game as well as 9.9 boards as a Bulldog, the 20-year-old only increased his value as a draft prospect. The draft is loaded with high-profiled prospects and Holmgren is arguably the best player on the board.

Player Bio

Name: Chet Holmgren
Jersey: No. 34
School: Gonzaga
Class: Freshman
Height: 7’0″
Weight: 195 lbs

Strengths

Holmgren has a unique style of play. His size allows him to shift around defenders and beat them to the hoop with lengthy strides. He thrives off the glass and is lethal from anywhere beyond the arc. He works well in the alley-oop game and can shoot over defenders with his lanky build. The seven-footer works well on and off the ball and his smooth footwork is only an upside. He may lack the strength, however, Holmgren is resilient on the offensive end. With a 60 field goal percentage and 39 percent from the arc, defenders can only hope that the Minnesota native is off his mark.

On the defensive end, Holmgren proves to be just as valuable. Above-average defensive instincts and is always the first to his defender. He moves quickly on the lateral end and is always a step ahead of his opponents. In addition, Holmgren is a deadly shot blocker and covers a ton of ground with his length. Averaging 3.7 blocks per game will only draw attention to NBA teams.

Weaknesses

The lack of strength is the only downside to Holmgren’s game. While his 7’0″ build gives him the edge over smaller players, the competition will only get better when he reaches the NBA. Weighing just 195 lbs, Holmgren will need to beef up in order to compete at a high level. Furthermore, the blossoming center shot 71 percent from the line, hurting his potential as the number-one overall pick.

Summary

Holmgren is not your common center. He is capable of almost anything on the court and will be a vital component of an NBA team. His athletic abilities and leadership are also compelling features of his game. While the strength is deficient, Holmgren is bound to hit the gym when he goes pro. Nonetheless, the 20-year-old is poised to be taken in the first three picks and has a fighting chance for number one.
