Twitter teams with Shopify to boost on-site e-commerce

Are social networks set to be the next big thing when it comes to shopping destinations? It's a trend that has been growing in recent months. And Twitter is no exception. The platform is teaming up with Shopify to set up a system designed to give a boost to the sale of merchants' products. We take a look.

Will Twitter be the new-generation storefront? The social network continues to innovate in terms of online commerce. With shopping on social networks one of the biggest trends of 2022, Twitter has announced a new collaboration with Shopify, the e-commerce platform.

The aim of this partnership is to allow merchants on Shopify to link their account to their Twitter profile in order to display the products they're selling in a kind of online storefront. Users will only have to click on a product to make a purchase at which time they will still be redirected to the product page on Shopify. Merchants can either display a selection of products in a carousel format with Shop Spotlight or offer a dedicated product page with Twitter Shops.

For merchants, one of the benefits of this collaboration will be the ability to display products available on their Shopify account simultaneously, without having to update the list on Twitter separately -- a time- and effort-saving maneuver for merchants

By agreeing to log into their Twitter business account via Shopify, merchants will be able to take advantage of a wide range of convenient options such as filling in their contact information, hours and address. For now, only Shopify merchants residing in the United States will be able to take advantage of this new option.

"Reaching potential customers where they are is critical to the success of Shopify merchants. Twitter is where conversations happen, and the connection between conversations and commerce is vital. Our partnership with Twitter, and the launch of the Twitter sales channel, will let merchants seamlessly bring commerce to the conversations they're already having on the platform," outlined Amir Kabbara, Director of Product, Shopify.

Twitter took the occasion to point out that 6.5 billion tweets mentioning commerce were exchanged worldwide in 2021.

This is not Shopify's first collaboration with a social media platform. The e-commerce site participated in TikTok's "For You Summit" event in July 2021.
