Camping, knitting or visiting Paris... on TikTok, women's rights advocates are sharing coded messages

Social networks often have a language of their own and this week has been no exception when it comes to discssions of the overturning of landmark Roe v Wade decision on abortion. After the US Supreme Court revoking the constitutional right to in the country, women's rights advocates took to social media to offer their help, often communicating through the use of codes and a song by The Chainsmokers. We take a look.

There are suggestions about going "camping," "visiting Paris" or even "knitting." Since the repeal of Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed the right to abortion throughout the United States, women's rights advocates, "pro-choice" supporters have posted numerous videos on TikTok to offer their help. And they don't need to openly use the word "abortion;" users living in states where abortion is still legal are offering a safe space for those who don't and are in need of an abortion under the pretext of another activity.

"I live 4 hours from the Montana border. If you need to learn to knit you can come here to learn. I will take care of you, feed you and give you hugs while you learn," wrote user jessem70 on her video which has reached more than 2.3 million views on TikTok. For fear of being censored or hounded, Internet users are going all out in their inventiveness by talking about taking a "vacation" in Paris or going to eat a "poutine" in Canada, where the right to abortion is guaranteed.

The number of these kinds of videos has surged on the TikTok platform since the announcement of the Supreme Court decision on June 24. And this trend even has its own "anthem," which is none other than the track "Paris" by the band The Chainsmokers. On the Chinese social network, the song, although dating from 2017, has reached more than 134,000 views to date. Faced with this unexpected buzz, the band reacted in turn with a video posted on its TikTok account, in duet with another user: "we did not see that coming but are glad that something we wrote is being used to support a cause we believe in," they wrote in the caption of the video.

The wave of solidarity is, as is often the case on social networks, accompanied by several keywords. They include the chorus of the Chainsmokers song "Paris" #ifwegodownthenwegodowntogether which has collected so far more than 34 million views on TikTok. A slight variation #ifwegodownwegodowntogether has so far racked up 1.5 million views. The hashtag #roevwade has exceeded 2.8 billion views on TikTok.

This historic event echoes the one that shook Poland in October 2020 when that country banned abortions even in cases of severe fetal malformation. A situation that has not been forgotten by Internet users: "If my girlies from Poland want to discover Paris, I have a nice couch, we can chat," posted TikToker anxiousandfabulous.
