Dodge is doing away with its Challenger and Charger product lineup and making room for an all-electric future, as are many of America’s auto manufacturers. That being said, Dodge recently filed a new name with the trademark office, the “Tomahawk” and it’s unclear whether it will be used for an all-electric performance flagship like the Challenger, or a Jeep of some kind like the Trackhawk.
Carbuzz found that FCA U.S. filed the name “Tomahawk” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on June 23rd of this year. According to Carbuzz the name has been used before, more than once. They used the name on a four-wheel motorcycle sporting a Viper V-10 at one point however we know this vehicle name won’t be tied to a motorcycle of any kind. The trademark states the name will be used in association with land vehicles, specifically a passenger car. The name was also used as recently as 2016 in the video game Gran Turismo 6, the Tomahawk in the game was a concept vehicle capable of 2,590 horsepower.
While both of these instances lead some to believe the “Tomahawk” will be performance oriented, and we expect some kind of Dodge EV muscle car soon, it’s important to note that Jeep has had a history of using native American vernacular for some of its off-road machines like the Grand Cherokee. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see this nameplate used as a replacement for the Trackhawk, presumably something hybrid or fully electric, as the supercharged V8 formula will likely never exist again as we’ve known it.
Dodge is one of the last major auto manufacturers to join the all-electric party. Rivian, Ford, GMC, Chevy, and even Jeep have jumped in with either plug-in hybrids or fully electric automobiles. We will have to wait until August to find out what Dodge is bringing to the table and where this new name fits in. The company is set to reveal three new vehicles during speed week August 15th to 17th.
