Netflix is bringing a 'cinematic' audio experience to subscribers

Is Netflix hoping to turn our homes into veritable movie theaters? The streaming platform is putting more and more emphasis on the quality of its content. After rolling out improved image quality, the American giant is now tackling sound by offering spatial audio for shows like "Stranger Things."

"Netflix spatial audio helps to translate the cinematic experience of immersive audio to any stereo, so the work creators do to bring you into the story happens no matter what device you use to watch Netflix," said the streaming giant in a news release

Now available to all of the platform's subscribers worldwide, this new audio mode provides superior sound quality that is close to a "movie theater" experience: "Often, the subtlety of sound goes unnoticed, but it can have a profound impact on the atmosphere of a scene and fundamentally change the audience's response," explains the platform. And there's no need for home theater equipment, as Netflix says the Sennheiser AMBEO technology can deliver an immersive surround sound experience that is above all compatible with all devices. And that's a major boon -- especially since the feature will be available for all types of membership plans.

The platform states that, for users without surround sound speakers, spatial audio is enabled automatically when watching a compatible show or movie using stereo audio. For those with surround sound speakers, watching TV shows and movies in 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos is recommended. Note, however, that users not using such equipment should be sure to change the settings to stereo audio output. The 5.1 audio output setting can often be set by default on some televisions, and this disables spatial audio

For now, not all shows and movies are available with spatial audio. Subscribers can type "spatial audio" in the platform's search bar to discover the list of compatible content. A total of 27 shows and movies are already available, including the hit series "Stranger Things," the "Red Notice" movie with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, and the "Jennifer Lopez: Halftime" documentary.
