Stimulus Check From Rhode Island: Gov. Mckee Announces $250 Child Tax Credit

States are continuing to send targeted relief to their residents to help them offset the impact of rising gas prices and inflation. These states are sending the relief money in one form or another, such as a tax rebate, child tax credit, etc. Rhode Island is the latest state to join this growing list, and it will be sending the relief money in the form of a child tax credit. This stimulus check from Rhode Island will be a one-time payment and is expected to arrive this fall.

Stimulus Check From Rhode Island: Who Will Get It?

Gov. Dan McKee, on Tuesday, announced that eligible taxpayers would get a one-time stimulus check from Rhode Island in the fall. Eligible residents will get a rebate of $250 per child for a maximum of up to three children per household.

Moreover, the rebate will be available for dependents who were 18 years or younger as of Dec. 31, 2021. Anyone who claimed at least one dependent (below the age of 18 as of Dec. 31, 2021) on their 2021 federal/state personal income tax return may be eligible for the credit.

Talking about the income eligibility, individual tax filers, married filing separately, head of household, or qualifying widow/widower, will be eligible for the credit if their annual income is $100,000 or less. The threshold income for those filing jointly is $200,000 or less.

McKee’s office estimates that about 115,000 households could qualify for the child tax credit. The state will start sending the money in October 2022 to the addresses provided by taxpayers on their 2021 state personal income tax return. Taxpayers whose address has changed since then are advised to contact the Rhode Island Division of Taxation to update their address.

When To Expect The Payment

Taxpayers who have filed their 2021 return by the August 31 deadline can expect to get the credit in October. Those filing an extension by the October 17 deadline will start getting the payment in December.

“The Division of Taxation is working now on building the processes for getting this money to taxpayers as quickly as possible,” Tax Administrator Neena S. Savage said.

No application is required to get the stimulus check from Rhode Island, rather eligible households will get the payment automatically. This child tax credit program is part of the FY 23 budget that was signed by the Governor in June.
