Blackshirts issued to nine players on defense ahead of opener against Northwestern
Nebraska football coaches ran the Huskers through two hours of practice Wednesday, the first drills in Ireland for the team.
After handing out Blackshirts to nine of his players, defensive coordinator Erik Chinander said he's looking forward to seeing how the defense performs come game time Saturday against Northwestern.
"I want to see if these guys are who I think they are," he said. "By that I mean, will they play as hard as they have, can they step it up a bit? I want to see big-time effort. ... Some of these guys are starting their first game, so we'll see how they operate."
He said the team's energy was good Wednesday despite the overseas traveling.
"I thought they came out and practiced well today," he said. "They were ready to go. The schedule's been great. The people have been doing an unbelievable job getting us all the accommodations we need. And our people back home did a great job with setting our kids up for success over here."
Offensive coordinator Mark Whipple said the quarterbacks finished well Wednesday after a slow start. "As the practice rolled on, they were getting their legs back and feeling better," he said.
