Axelrod Performing Arts Center to launch Sondheim Centennial Project as part of 2023 season

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center’s Sondheim Centennial Project will begin with “Sunday in the Park With George.”

The Axelrod Performing Arts Center will produce the 1984 Stephen Sondheim musical, “Sunday in the Park With George,” next year, as the first part of its Sondheim Centennial Project. This undertaking will feature eight Sondheim musicals over the course of eight years, ending in 2030, the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the late Sondheim’s birth.

According to a press release, the series, curated by Axelrod’s artistic director Andrew DePrisco, also will include “concerts and showcases of living composers, to honor the master’s commitment to new voices and the future of musical theater.”

“Sunday in the Park With George” will be directed and choreographed by Eamon Foley and will run from Nov. 3 to Nov. 19 in 2023.

Axelrod also has announced the other shows in its 2023 season, which will begin Feb. 24-March 12 with a 30th anniversary revival of “Raisin,” the musical based on Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama “A Raisin in the Sun.” Evelyn Collins will direct and Phylicia Rashad will serve as production consultant; Rashad won a Tony for her acting in the 2004 revival of “A Raisin in the Sun.”

May 5-21, Axelrod will present New Jersey’s first professional production of “The Prom,” the Tony-nominated musical that ran on Broadway in 2018 and 2019. Hunter Foster, who directed an excellent production of “The Bridges of Madison County” at Axelrod in March of this year, will direct.

Axelrod has one more musical planned for this year: The irreverent musical “Avenue Q,” which runs Nov. 4-20.
