2024 FORD MUSTANG ECOBOOST ENGINE: WHAT'S NEW AND DIFFERENT

All the attention so far about the new Mustang has been given to the V8 engine attached to a manual transmission, and while it’s incredible that we can still have that sort of powertrain considering the automotive climate these days, the Mustang’s other engine option also deserves a closer look.

According to Ford, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is all new for the 2024 Mustang, but what exactly has changed?

YouTuber Stang Mode was able to document many of the major changes found in the next-generation 2.3L EcoBoost engine in the 2024 Ford Mustang. Regarding the internals, there are new pistons, new connecting rods, new camshaft, new fuel delivery system, new air induction system, and an electronically controlled turbo present, to name a few.

Those new pistons and rods help bump the compression ratio up to 10.6:1 from 9.5:1. This also suggests that the engine requires less boost to reach its horsepower and torque numbers, potentially leaving room for tuners to increase the pressure and add horsepower, provided they can pass the locked down engine control unit.

Speaking of boost, the turbocharger is now a twin-scroll unit with an electronically controlled wastegate, and the engine will also now use internally plumbed exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR). While EGR is known for reducing emissions, it’s also been known to shorten the lifespan of an engine, so we’ll have to see what sort of measures Ford engineers took to mitigate that.

Finally, the direct injection fuel pressure of the EcoBoost is being bumped up to 5,000 psi and will be paired with port injection for a dual-injected setup.

Despite all the fanfare around #savethemanuals, the EcoBoost will not be offered with the transmission option at this time. Instead, it will be paired solely with the 10R80 automatic 10-speed auto.

Official horsepower and torque numbers still elude the S650 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, but the expectation is that we are to see more than the 332 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque that was in the S550 Mustang EcoBoost HPP. Can we get 350 hp, 400 lb-ft, Ford? Please?
