Toyota truck arm Hino mulls punitive action on execs over data fraud

Toyota Motor Corp.'s truck-making subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd. is considering punitive action against former executives over a fraudulent emission data reporting scandal that goes back some 20 years, the company said Friday.

Hino will likely ask its former executives to return salary paid as punishment for the data doctoring scheme, while three current board members are expected to resign to take responsibility, a source familiar with the matter said.

President Satoshi Ogiso is likely to remain in his post to oversee a process of management renewal, though his compensation package will be reduced, according to the source.

Following a news report Friday that Hino is planning to take the action against the current board members and former executives, the company said in a statement it is considering what punishment to apply and will take up the matter at a board meeting to be held later in the day.

Ogiso is expected to report to transport minister Tetsuo Saito on Friday afternoon the measures Hino will take to prevent a similar issue from reoccurring. He will then hold a press conference.

The ministry issued a corrective order to the truck maker in early September, demanding it come up with measures within a month to prevent it from happening again.

Hino admitted in March this year that it submitted fraudulent emissions and fuel economy data to transport authorities, suspending the shipment of vehicles with engines for which the figures had been doctored.
