Before any photo evidence existed, there was expectation that there would be a Ford Mustang hybrid for the S650 generation. This rumor is nothing new, as even the S550 Mustang was reported to have a hybrid of some kind. Yet there isn’t a seventh-generation Mustang hybrid, and there won’t be a seventh-generation Mustang hybrid. To further clarify the matter, we at MC&T decided to ask Ford Mustang chief engineer Ed Krenz to get more details.
The Origin Of S650 Ford Mustang Hybrid Rumor
“(The S650 Ford Mustang Hybrid was) never a thing,” said Krenz, referencing a social media post that referenced the vehicle before the program ever started. “Clearly, it set the internet on fire. But, since this program started – I’ve been with it from that point – we’ve always been fully ICE. No Regrets.” Krenz stated.

Ultimately, there isn’t a need for a Ford Mustang hybrid, as the automaker has the Mustang Mach-E. The Mach-E simultaneously satisfies customer demand for an electrified performance vehicle within the Mustang nameplate, while appeasing current regulatory framework. As a result, we have to express our gratitude to the Mach-E for ensuring the S650 Ford Mustang keeps to a formula that’s embraced by enthusiasts, while the the electric SUV does the heavy lifting in regards to current CAFE standards.
The Mach-E has been a strong seller for Ford, even eclipsing Mustang coupe sales in some months. It allowed Ford to leave the beloved formula of the coupe alone, giving a product for the more die-hard muscle car enthusiasts to rally around. In fact, it’s perhaps the only product for them to rally around as Dodge will be removing the V8 from its muscle car lineup, and the Chevrolet Camaro nameplate will disappear after the 2024 model year. Leaving the Mustang as the last V8 muscle car on the market.
