Soccer: Kubo helps Sociedad clinch Europa League knockout berth

Takefusa Kubo helped Real Sociedad secure a spot in the Europa League knockout stage by setting up a goal in a 3-0 victory at home to Moldovan side Sheriff on Thursday.

The Japan attacker came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute and assisted on Robert Navarro's 81st-minute goal, completing the rout after Alexander Sorloth and Diego Rico found the net for the Spanish club either side of halftime.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when defender Armel Zohouri received his second yellow card in the 33rd minute in San Sebastian.

The victory cemented Sociedad at the top of Group E with a maximum 12 points from their four matches.

Kubo's Samurai Blue teammate Ritsu Doan also booked a spot in the next phase with German Bundesliga side Freiburg, who thrashed French club Nantes 4-0 for their fourth straight win in Group G.

In Group D, Genki Haraguchi started for Union Berlin in a 1-0 victory over Swedish champions Malmo. The Bundesliga club clinched the result with an 89th-minute penalty and sit third in the group with two wins and two losses.

In Group A, Takehiro Tomiyasu came off the bench late for Arsenal, who improved to three wins from three by beating Norway's Bodo/Glimt 1-0.

Takumi Minamino was a second-half substitute for Monaco in a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Turkish side Trabzonspor that left the French Ligue 1 club third in Group H with a 2-2 record.
