Flooding: Citizens Advocate for measures of flood reoccurrences in Jigawa; Calling for the release of River water during the Dry season

Area Development Support Initiative ADSI has advocated the authorities of the Hadejia-Jama’are river basin take necessary measures in containing the devastating flood caused by the running water in Jigawa state.

The flood which sends hundreds of thousands of people homeless in the state was caused by the running water that was released from Tiga Dam Kano state.

This is coming during the distribution of relief materials to flood victims in Karnaya community, Dutse local government of Jigawa state on Monday.

Salisu Muhammad Birniwa who represented Iya Hauwa foundation said the Tiga Dam should be release during dry season for people to benefit through farming and fishing and also avoid any harm by flooding.

Muhammad who received intervention for Auyo and Hadejia flood areas suggested that more dams should be created with a view to contain the water when released.

He said many people lost their lives, Houses ravaged, farmlands submerged as a result of the floods.

Salisu Muhammad then appreciates the efforts of ADSI for providing the relief materials to victims of flood.

The distribution of relief materials by ADSI covers three communities in three local government areas that were affected by the flood.

These communities were Karnaya in Dutse local government, Auyo town and also Hadejia Area.

He said the intervention is a phase-two where they would continue to provide support for need as part of ADSI aims and objectives.

Adamu Ahmadu, the village head of Karnaya as he benefitted with relief materials thanks the efforts of ADSI, he said his people are in need of support because of the situation they find themselves.

The village head then called on the government to do the possible best to divert the water into an area where it won’t affect people and their farm lands.
