GM’s Investor Day 2022 presentation recently took place in New York City, and the manufacturer touted how its EV investments over the past few years are beginning to show the fruit to come. Slides from the presentation for automaker president Mark Reuss advertise that the Chevrolet Bolt is the number one mass-market EV. More slides follow this focus on their vehicles until a few slides veer to the left, and Reuss states that GM dealer service centers have made “11,180 repairs on Teslas” since 2021.
Outside of the make and number, little is known about the claim. For example, the nature of the repairs is unclear, but we can’t imagine they’re too involved. We live in an era where vehicles from legacy OEMs increasingly require proprietary diagnostic tools, and modern ECUs are being locked down. Supposedly, Tesla powertrains need access to the carmaker’s Garage Tools server to pull codes and run self-tests. As it stands, Tesla currently struggles to get parts for its range, so there’s no reason to think GM could or would. However, Tesla did begin selling two subscriptions to service, repair, and diagnostic software last year. General Motors dealers (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick/GMC) may have got in on that, but that’s just speculation. GM techs may be limited to fixes like suspension work, brake jobs, tire rotations, and fluid flushes.

Meanwhile, the majority of comments from Tesla owners scoff at the idea of taking their cars to a GM dealer for any reason. But, one person admitted that receiving a legacy battery with a 300-mile range rather than paying $16,000 for a brand-new battery pack from Tesla would be something they would be willing to do. Meanwhile, another commenter stated that they have a GMC Sierra Hybrid with work that needs to be done, and all the local dealers refuse to work on it.
Whatever the case, Tesla owners waiting for their cars to be finished will likely gander around the showroom and peruse GM’s electric offerings. Tesla CEO Elon Musk hasn’t made any comments about GM’s claim, but in June of this year, he stated that Tesla North America is working on improving its service centers.
