Toyota Oct. global output jumps 23% as pandemic impact eases

Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday its global output grew 23.0 percent and its global sales climbed 22.8 percent in October from a year earlier as the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic receded.

With the output of 771,382 vehicles and sales of 832,373 units, the major Japanese automaker eclipsed the previous year's figures for a third consecutive month.

Toyota's domestic output expanded 33.7 percent from a year earlier to 203,149 vehicles, while its overseas output rose 19.5 percent to 568,233 units, with Chinese production increasing 18.4 percent and North American production growing 16.2 percent.

Domestic sales, including those of minivehicles, soared 34.3 percent to 113,723 units.

Overseas sales rose 21.2 percent to 718,650 vehicles, with North American sales jumping 26.8 percent.

The figures for overseas production and sales were both record highs for October.

Sales in China climbed 20.1 percent on the back of the government's economic stimulus measures.

The latest figures reflect Toyota's recovery from supply chain disruptions prompted by COVID-19, and sluggish production and sales in Southeast Asia last year.

A semiconductor shortage has persisted, however, prompting Toyota to cut its global output plan for fiscal 2022 to 9.2 million vehicles from 9.7 million.

Delays in the delivery of new cars also persist.

Toyota announced on Sept. 22 that it expected to produce 800,000 vehicles globally in October, but it revised the figure downward to 750,000 units a week later.
