GM'S NEW SIERRA HD AND SILVERADO HD TRUCKS HAVE GCW ALERT: HERE'S WHAT THAT MEANS

The 2024 GMC Sierra HD and Chevrolet Silverado HD are the next vehicles within General Motors’ campaign to refresh its stalwart pickup truck lineup. The updated Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks came last year. Then by the summer of 2022, the new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon stepped into the light. Finally, the Heavy Duty trucks have entered the playing field. While they’re coming with plenty of exciting upgrades and features, one technology system new to the 2024 HD trucks has brought about some questions, the GCW Alert.

Details On New Sierra HD and New Silverado HD GCW Alert

The GCW Alert found on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Canyon HD is an integrated scale system in the trucks that let drivers know if they’ve exceeded the truck’s Gross Combined Weight Rating, which can vary based on cab style, trim level, mechanical content, packages, and more.

“So, the GCW Alert, which is new to this model year, can now take the torque and the acceleration and determine where we’re at from a GCW Alert aspect and sends it back to determine if it’s a concern or not.” GM HD truck engineers told MC&T, while also elaborating how the technology differed from a payload scale, which is something that can be found on select Ford trucks.

“It’s all through algorithms within those two different variables. So it’s not like a scale. It can feel (the weight) based on the shift pattern and algorithms. It’s a different way of looking at it.”

Unlike a payload scale, the GCW Alert only works when the vehicle is in motion as “the truck needs to learn what it’s pulling, and then it can report our algorithm based off that,” engineers told us. It’s a pretty interesting system and one that could prove quite helpful, giving drivers more information at their disposal that they didn’t have before.
