GM has just announced a concept racer based on the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2, which is slated to join the GM Specialty Vehicles product line next year. That said, there apparently aren’t any immediate plans for the truck to be used in competition. Instead, it will undergo testing and development work early next year, something Supercars legend Craig Lowndes will be involved with.
Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Australian Race Truck Concept: Details
The Australian Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Race Truck was designed and built in Port Melbourne by a group of GM employees with help from Chevrolet Racing, which has replaced Holden Motorsport. GM Motorsports Division and Hall Racing in the US have also contributed to the development of the concept racer. The Silverado will join a Chevrolet Racing line-up that includes the Gen3 Camaro Supercar and the Camaro Pro Slammer drag car. But those two vehicles at least get to be used in competitions.
The program has been overseen by GM Australia and New Zealand Employee Mark Wakeman, who has accumulated 25 years of off-road racing experience. The Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 will arrive for the 2023 model year as a new model within the General Motors Specialty Vehicles line-up. With the impressive off-road capability from the truck right off the dealer lot, it’s a perfect platform for Chevrolet Racing. Not to mention the Silverado ZR2 race truck in the US has had some great success in competitions.
According to GM ANZ’s planning, network, and motorsport director, Tim Price, the Silverado ZR2 Race Truck concept began development a year ago with assistance from GM teams within Australia and New Zealand, who built the vehicle into what we have here. If you live in the land down under, the Silverado concept will be on display at this weekend’s Adelaide 500, marking the final appearance of Holden in Supercars before the Camaro replaces the Commodore. 2023 will be a race season to watch in Supercars as Ford brings the Mustang Dark Horse to the competition.
