Hideo Kojima says he wants to become an AI after death

The gaming auteur behind Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Death Stranding Hideo Kojima, has said he wants to become an AI after his death.

In an interview with IGN, Kojima spoke about his plans for the future, including a surprising goal that’s fitting of the eccentric game director. Kojima may have Death Stranding 2, a Death Stranding movie, and more on his plate, but that hasn’t stopped him from looking very far forward to the possibility of ascending to post-human sentience as an artificial intelligence. Here’s what he said.

Hideo Kojima wants to become an AI in order to make video games

Hideo Kojima is known for his eccentric games and creative process, but an interview with IGN made clear exactly how out there his thinking is when it comes to his continued career in video games. When asked by IGN’s Shuka Yamada about what sort of philosophies and approaches he hoped to instill in the culture of Kojima Productions over the next 50-100 years, Kojima had a very interesting response, saying that he hoped to still be creating video games when that time comes.

“But you know, I’ll probably become an AI and stick around. You need to be stimulated in lots of different ways if you want to keep creating new things, so I imagine I’ll keep collaborating with others and taking in new things even if I’m an AI.”

He’ll need to wait for some significant technological improvements to do so, but it’s not unsurprising to see him considering unusual methods to continue his creative career. At 59 years old, Kojima still has plenty of time left to make games with or without his possible transformation into an artificial intelligence, so even if he doesn’t reach the technological singularity in time, fans will still get plenty of Kojima’s creations.
