Asmongold recently ended a stream abruptly over his disgust with Twitch’s ads.
World of Warcraft streamer Asmongold has been growing significantly the past few years. He currently has over 3.4 million followers on his main channel and another 1 million on his second channel. The heavily watched streamer has become popular for his MMORPG grinding as well as his blunt opinions. He has never been afraid to call out Blizzard, Twitch, and other major companies.
This time around, Asmongold has his sights on the increase in ads on Twitch streams.
Asmongold rants about amount of ads on Twitch
While reacting to an Elden Ring stream by fellow OTK member, Asmongold was interrupted by a string of ads. Right when the ads first popped up, Asmongold rolled his eyes and slapped his desk.
“I’m going to bed. I’m so f—ing sick of this s—. This is f—ing ridiculous,” Asmongold said.
He added that he may not even be able to sleep, but reassured fans that he’d be back the next day.
Asmongold has been outspoken about Twitch’s ads before. Late last year, Twitch announced an “ad incentive” program for larger content creators, basically offering them large chunks of change in exchange for rolling out a certain amount of ads per month. But Asmongold found the situation insulting to streamers.
In a tweet soon after the update, Asmongold accused Twitch of “paying streamers to kill their channel,” and then eventually the whole platform.
Asmongold added that the amount of money Twitch is offering streamers is “life-changing.” Streamer Sweet Anita and a few others, however, noted that Twitch was actually appearing to rip them off in the process. She revealed that the new program offered her $1,096 a month to run four minutes of ads every hour. But the previous month she made $1,173 without the excessive ads.
Another streamer, Distortion2, also seemed confused by the alleged incentive. He noted that he’d only make $10 more per month if he ran two extra minutes of ads every year.
For smaller streamers, the incentive was a lot more enticing. But many streamers still turned it down because they didn’t want to have three to five minutes of ads on their stream every hour.
After so much continued backlash, Twitch has announced that it’s looking to make some tweaks to this program. The streaming platform hopes that they can find a way to make ads “less interruptive” in the future. This is apparently not the current case, as experienced by Asmongold.
