Off-road, snow or ice: This modular bike tire can change its tread in line with road conditions

Rather than having a whole range of different wheels and tires for your bike, one manufacturer has had the good idea of coming up with a modular solution in which the tread can be changed according to the terrain or weather conditions. It's a unique concept that's still relatively little known.

Rather than having a whole range of different wheels and tires for your bike, one manufacturer has had the good idea of coming up with a modular solution in which the tread can be changed according to the terrain or weather conditions. It's a unique concept that's still relatively little known.

A Norwegian brand called reTyre is at the origin of this innovation. The aim is for cyclists to ride all year long with a main set of base tires, to which different upper tread layers can be added in line with uses and conditions. These attach to the base tire by means of a simple zipper.

To use this system, your bike will need to be fitted with the base tires. These feature a zipper, allowing the different tread layers to then be mounted. For the moment, reTyre has developed four types of treads that can be fitted onto the base tires. Two are suitable for rough terrain (trail and gravel) and two others are designed for challenging weather conditions (winter and ice). The latter two models are studded.

The installation and removal of the tread takes just a few seconds thanks to the zipper that runs the circumference of the wheel. This avoids cyclists having to change the full tire or even the entire wheel, which in both cases is often more arduous. Note that this solution is also particularly resistant to punctures and wear, thanks to its durable rubber components.
