Types of Specialty Shredders for Your Workplace

Most offices, both remote and commercial, use some type of shredder for their employees to dispose of personal documents. However, did you know that there are many other unique types of shredders beyond standard paper machines? Here are some of these specialty shredders that you might want to add to your workplace.

Disintegrator Machines

Most paper shredder manuals warn you not to insert items such as paper clips, CDs, credit cards, and more because they can cause jams and machine failure. While these are all among the items you should never put in a standard paper shredder, disintegrator shredders can handle them with ease. Manufacturers specially design these heavy-duty machines to handle common data storage accessories such as CDs, ID cards, hard drives, and more. These machines are ideal for security departments, data centers, and other businesses or teams that store and handle storage devices.

Hybrid Shredders

Some paper shredders come with specialty components that allow them to shred CDs, IDs, and other materials that are only compatible with disintegrators. These shredders usually have a dedicated slot for CDs and other materials alongside the main entry slot for paper. These specialty hybrid models don’t often support the same capacity or volume of non-paper materials. For example, when shredding CDs, you’ll need to load them one at a time as opposed to the larger volume that disintegrator machines can handle.

Industrial Shredding Machines

Industrial-scale paper shredders and disintegrators handle large volumes of paper and other items. Like disintegrators, these machines are also capable of destroying discs, plastic cards, and other office accessories. Industrial machines can even break down cardboard boxes, tapes, folders, and more. Typically, government organizations and banking institutions that go through substantial amounts of documents and storage devices rely on these devices.

Degausser Machines

While it doesn’t fall into the standard shredder category, degaussers are smart machines to have on-site at your workplace. A degausser uses magnetic fields to permanently scramble and erase the data on a hard drive or other storage devices. After degaussing, you can safely dispose of hard drives or put these accessories through a disintegrator for further destruction.

Now that you know more about the extended family of paper shredders, you might even consider adding some of these specialty models to your office. Considering our reliance on technological devices and accessories, every office should have devices capable of disposing of accessories that store confidential data.
