In Raine Allen-Miller‘s film Rye Lane, we follow Dom (David Jonsson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah) as they try to mend their broken hearts by using South London as their playground.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Miller discussed what it feels like for her first film to be premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
“The dream, really,” she laughed. “I mean, I’m sure everyone says that but like, it really is. It’s bonkers. And I think a film like mine, which is set in south London, it just feels really surreal for it to be premiered in the snow on the other side of the world. So yeah it’s great.”
Miller reflected on her inspiration behind the visual style of the film.
“Well, I think in all of my work, I’m obsessed with making every frame a painting, to a certain extent,” she revealed. “And I think even in comedy, which isn’t often shot beautifully, I really wanted to shoot a beautiful comedy. As somebody who is quite colorful, I just really like color generally. I think color just helps in so many ways.”
As for the scene, she’s most proud of, Miller said, “I would probably say the gallery scene. I don’t think it’s a perfect scene, but it represents, in its tone, everything that I’m about, I would say. The way it looks, the performances, the oddness of it, is very me and I really like it.”
