Our perception of what age is considered old has increased over time, according to a new study. Researchers found that middle-aged and older adults in Germany believe that old age begins later in life than people did previously. They analysed data from 14,056 participants in the German Ageing Survey, which includes people born between 1911 and 1974. Study participants were surveyed up to eight times over 25 years and asked "at what age would you describe someone as old". They were assessed in 1996 and then re-questioned over time with new participants entering the survey later. "This is why we...

Italy’s ageing problem is starting to take a toll on the country’s world-famous ‘dolce vita’. The country’s growing number of pensioners isn’t nearly matched by the number of newborns, and efforts by Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government to boost birth rates have so far failed to turn the tide on Italy's demographic decline. According to the latest data from Eurostat, Italy is the oldest country in the European Union, with an average median age of above 48. Together with Portugal, Italy has the highest percentage of residents older than 65 at 24%. That's roughly one in four. This increase ref...

By 2050, the number of people aged 65 and over is set to rise to 1.6 billion globally. This is more than double the figure seen in 2021. The trend is driven by two intrinsically positive factors: improved population health and female autonomy. Whilst people are living longer, women’s education is also improving, meaning they’re generally having fewer children. The effects of an ageing population are more concerning than its catalysts. Just last year, many of the world’s eyes followed the political unrest in France. When President Macron government’s announced it wished to raise the retirement ...

Anyone born after April 1970 in the UK may have to work until they are 71, according to a new report from the Longevity Centre. The current age threshold to draw a state pension is 66 years old, although it is projected to rise to 68 by 2044. Experts say a gradual hike is necessary to maintain the status quo of the constant number of workers per state pensioner. If the proportion of retirees to workers grows, there is likely to be a lack of employees to keep up with rising consumer demand, the report says. The labour disparity is more of an immediate problem in the UK than in less developed na...

The number of new cancer cases in Europe is estimated to grow by 22.5 per cent over the next two decades, according to new estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). That’s as the number of cancer diagnoses grows 55 per cent globally between 2022 and 2045, from roughly 19.9 million cancer cases in 2022 to 30.9 million cases in 2045. The new estimates were released ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4 and highlight the “growing burden” of cancer and a need to address cancer inequities, according to IARC, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). Am...

A new study has uncovered the first evidence that a few rare cases of Alzheimer’s disease may have been acquired through an obsolete medical procedure carried out decades ago. Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disorder and the most common form of dementia that most often impacts people over 65. The disease is thought to be caused by the accumulation of proteins such as the amyloid-beta protein in the brain. This causes plaques that disrupt brain functions, initially affecting memory and later areas that control language and social behaviour, according to Alzheimer Europe. In a new study, U...
